You can check the status of your partitions and file systems by running the Computer Management application that comes with Windows XP

1. Select the “My Computer” icon on your desktop.
2. Click the right mouse button and select the Manage option.
3. The Computer Management screen will be displayed. Select Disk Management from the list.

The available partitions and file systems with their configurations will be displayed. Each physical disk can be split up into many partitions, each partition can in turn appear as a logical drive (addressed C:, D:, E: etc...).

FAT and NTFS file systems organise the way the data is stored by using a Master Boot Record (MBR) and a Partition Table. These are found in the first sector of the drive, and determine how the disk structure is organised and instructs the computer which partition to boot from.

Shortcut method to open Disk management

Click Start > Run > and type diskmgmt.msc > OK.

This will bring up the Disk Management window, which will have your HDD's in there.
